This post is brought to you by Seventh Generation and Mom Bloggers for Social Good. #FightToxins
Six years ago, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer. This changed my perspective on life completely when I began to question why this had happened. What had caused him to get cancer? After extensive research and learning about the causes of cancer, for example carcinogens, I knew I needed to make a huge life changes. Not just for me, but my entire family. Watching my Dad fight the battle for six years truly opened my eyes because I would never want another person to have to live through that.
Then I became a mom for the first time and I knew, no better place to start making changes then right at home because I was no longer responsible for just myself, but now an innocent child. I became responsible for every aspect of Sophie’s life, her health and safety being the most important. Now that I am a mom, I’ve become more conscious about the products I buy. I try to buy as much organic food as I can afford, I switched my cosmetics to organic products and most importantly started buying green cleaning products.
With that being said, I am thrilled to announce that I was chosen to work with Seventh Generation on their Fight Toxins campaign. I couldn’t be more happy because Seventh Generation is a brand I trust and personally use in my own home.
The Toxin Freedom Fighters Campaign
Did you know, since the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) was passed in 1976, there has been over 85,000 synthetic chemicals introduced into the market and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has required testing on less than 10% of those chemicals? Scientists have linked exposure to toxic chemicals to many health risks, such as Cancer, Alzheimer’s, learning disabilities, asthma, birth defects, and various reproductive problems. The Toxic Substances Control Act (the United States main chemical safety law) makes it nearly impossible for the EPA to take action against dangerous chemicals, even those that are known to cause serious health effects.
There are so many risks that accompany untested chemicals. Think about all the different cleaners you use and what you are using them on: dishes, toys, clothes. Do you see some things under your sink you don’t feel so comfortable about using anymore? I don’t know about you, but personally, I do not feel comfortable using untested chemicals around my family.
You may be thinking one of two things:
- What can I do to make a difference?
- There is nothing I can do to get a law changed.
Rest assured; if you have had either of those two thoughts, I’m here to tell you there is hope! Seventh Generation is working to push a reform on TSCA which would have all of these chemicals studied, evaluated and tested. Seventh Generation has created the Toxin Freedom Fighters Campaign to demand that Congress reevaluate the Toxic Substances Control Act for the first time since 1976. A reform to this act will mean that each chemical will have to be thoroughly studied and tested before it can be put out on the shelf.
What can you do to help?
If Seventh Generation can collect 100,000 signatures, the Toxin Freedom Fighters will deliver them to Congress on April 30, 2014. The signatures will strengthen the movement behind chemical reform, and will encourage decision-makers to change the necessary laws.
Be a voice that helps to create change and be part of the solution. Add your signature to the Seventh Generation petition here.
As parents, it’s our responsibility to take action for the next generation. If we take the right steps, our children will all live a cleaner, toxin-free life.
